Taronga Zoo
Wild!Rhino
About the project
Years before I worked on the Taronga Zoo account at TBWA Sydney, I participated in a charity art event called Wild!Rhino. 150 rhino sculptures were created and placed around Sydney, then auctioned off to raise money for the endangered Black Rhino species. The artwork I created, ‘Hatching’, was displayed at Wynyard Station.
Concept
‘Hatching’ is a symbol of new hopes and beginnings for an endangered species. Incorporating symbols of life, death and rebirth from a broad array of global cultures, this artwork represents the opportunity for a second chance at life through the charity program.
2021 Update
After living his best life in the city, ‘Hatching’ settled in for retirement on my parents’ farm.
Until the March 2021 floods.
He was displaced from his usual perch along the shoreline, and went on a flood fuelled river cruise. The 500kg behemoth travelled 65km downstream.
Luckily Donna found him washed up on the bank; he’s now safely back home.
2022 Update
Unfortunately Hatching’s journey wasn’t over yet. He took such a long trip in this next flood, he made the newspaper. See his 15 seconds of fame here.
